Broadway Poll

Three actors share the title role in Billy Elliot, alternating performances equally. How would you like to see the Tony Awards handle this unusual situation when it comes time to consider nomination eligibility?

  A.  Since they each average less than three performances a week they should not be considered for any Tony honors.
  B.  If all three are considered deserving, they should receive a special honor.
  C.  If all three are considered deserving, they should receive a special Tony.
  D.  They should keep the eligibility rule as is and only consider the actor who performs on opening night for a nomination.
  E.  They should be eligible to share a nomination with a vote for one counting as a vote for all three.
  F.  They each should be eligible for separate nominations with voters required to see all nominated Billys.
  G.  I’ve got a better idea and will leave a comment.

E

Like they did at the Oliviers in 2006.

E-xactly
by EugLoven @ 11/04/08, 01:33:10 PM

Just like the Oliviers... 3 boys, 1 nomination in 1 category (and 1 victory with 3 trophies).

o kool!!
by crazyforwicked91 @ 11/05/08, 06:24:16 PM

o wait i like that better. i put special tony but i like the Oliviers one better.

But...
by dramamama611 @ 11/07/08, 05:32:29 PM

Aren't they then awarding the ROLE instead of an actor???

Let all three perform on opening night
by Mamie @ 11/07/08, 08:15:25 PM

I think they should rotate the 3 boys into the opening night show at various points. Opening night is special and I'm not sure how many people will be there strictly to see the show anyway. This way all would qualify for playing the lead on opening night.

No "special" award
by ThankstoPhantom @ 11/09/08, 11:50:11 PM

Just because three boys are sharing the role, they should not automatically receive one award...that's awarding them based on an over-the-top praise. It should be either opening-night Billy or nothing...you really can't give three actors the same honor...it's very unlikely to be fair. But these three boys are fantastic, nonetheless!

no way to tell
by defygravity1185 @ 11/10/08, 06:46:48 AM

There's really no way to tell what the nominating committee will do. In the past, they've placed multiple actors into the same nomination for completely seperate performances in the same play, but they gave Philip Seymour Hoffman & John C. Reilly seperate slots for their rotations in True West. I'd like to see the Billy's get a joint nomination, but more than that, how will they all be reviewed?? Do they really expect Ben Brantley to come 3 times?? It doesn't seem fair to the boys.

Three actors, same role
by musicaldude572 @ 11/12/08, 10:38:29 PM

They're all original-cast-member Billys, so should all be considered separately for a nomination. As if there were three main roles played by three boys, because each Billy is going to be different. Just nominating the opening night Billy would not be right because it would be diminishing the importance of the other two boys, which is definitely not the goal of the triple-casting.

Well...
by dramamama611 @ 11/14/08, 03:07:37 AM

They have already been reviewed...the press doesn't all show up on the same preview performance. I've seen reviews on two of the three Billy's so far. And what's NOT fair...not like they didn't know this was going to happen! It's a business, not a parlour game. Again...I refuse to believe that ALL three of them would be worthy of the Tony Award....from the feedback I keep hearing: is that all three Billy's are fab dancers, passable actors and passable to weak singers. Doesn't sound like Tony Award Performances to me.

Additionally: I hate the idea of lumping them together as then the ROLE is getting the award, not the actor.

re: well...
by defygravity1185 @ 11/18/08, 04:31:48 PM

Yeah, but there aren't that many viable options anyway for Best Leading Actor. Also, the ROLE usually does get the award. In the case of a comedy or a drama, who's to say who did the better work. A ROLE that's more showy usually gets the award. Not that it matters one way or another...I'm just saying.
